That artifact emitted a kind of radiation that we still don't understand. Maybe it... changed something in Lucas.

– Mary suspecting the Artifact as the cause for Lucas' visions

Mary Kane is a character in Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy, mother to Lucas Kane and Markus Kane.

Information[]

As a government scientist who worked at the Wishita Military Base, she researched and studied the Chroma Artifact alongside her husband, John Kane. The two resided at the base with their two sons, Markus and Lucas Kane.

When Mary became pregnant with their second son, Lucas, she continued working near the Artifact. This resulted in her unborn child becoming irradiated by the Artifact, causing him to receive supernatural powers. After an incident where Lucas foresaw a hangar exploding, John and Mary got into an argument over whether their son could truly see into the future. Mary speculated that the Artifact could have altered Lucas and given him his abilities, but John refused to believe it.

At some point, the Kanes left the Wishita base. In 1999, John and Mary would be involved in a car accident that would claim their lives, causing their children to drift apart.

Trivia[]

  • Mary and her husband only appear in photographs and are never seen in-game. However, a flashback scene depicts John's shadow being cast along the floor.
  • Some sources give her name as Susan Barrett. This name was abandoned and replaced before the game's release.[1][2]
  • According to some early sources, Mary was a Christian. Markus was closest to his mother, and her religious beliefs led him to pursue priesthood after her death.
  • In "Hide and Seek," Lucas states that it has been ten years since his parents' death. Their gravestones list 1999 as their year of death and the chapter itself takes place on January 28. This places their death on January 28, 1999, and sets the game in 2009 (four years into the future from the game's release year of 2005).
  • There is an old family photo in Lucas' apartment. However, the icon that appears when the player interacts with it is a wedding photograph.
  • The couple in the wedding photo is likely of John and Mary Kane, as the only love interest mentioned for Lucas is his ex-girlfriend and Markus is a Roman Catholic priest.
